A couple of hours ago, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the number of nonfarm payroll jobs fell in April by an estimated 539 thousand, and that the unemployment rate increased to an estimated 8.9%, from 8.5% in March. Read the rest of this entry »
Today I’m going to be discussing Marx’s theory of fictitious capital and its relation to real capital accumulation. Along the way I’m going to focus on Marx’s seldom-read analysis of a French bank known as the Credit Mobilier, in which this theory played a fundamental role. I’ll conclude with some thoughts on how this relates to socialist politics today.
Working people need to mobilize in order to protect themselves during the economic crisis. But winning concessions from the government is not a solution to the crisis or pathway to a new boom. Consider the notion that the crisis is due to an upward redistribution of income that supposedly has depressed demand. This doesn’t hold water, and it’s dangerous as well.
