Episode 159: Marxism and the Philosophy of Science (Interview with David Bedford and W. Thom Workman Part I)

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly continue their discussion with political scientists David Bedford and W. Thom Workman about their book Marx, Engels and the Philosophy of Science. The conversation opens with the authors providing a brief summary of their work. After that, they explain why they regard their work as Marxist and what they hope to provide to Marxists who may dismiss the philosophy of science.

The authors and co-hosts also discuss Marx’s Law in the Tendential Fall in the Rate of Profit. Some discussion centers on their view that the purpose of the law is to supply a causal explanation of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall, not to predict that it must or will fall. They conclude that Marx didn’t call it “scientific socialism” for nothing.

Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss the battle against AI data centers, the Papal encyclical on AI, and what this struggle might grow into. They briefly discuss Erin Brockovich’s new website tracking data centers.
