Episode 129: Update on the Ukrainian Resistance to Putin’s Invasion (with Ralph Keller)

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome past guest and Marxist-Humanist Ralph Keller on the show to discuss the status of the Ukrainian struggle against Putin’s invasion. They discuss the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk, the rising resistance in Russian, and the imperative need for foreign aid to Ukraine’s struggle. Keller’s report has yet to be released, but keep your eyes on Marxist-Humanist Initiative’s publication, With Sober Senses, where it will be published.

They also discuss the political situation in Germany, where support for the Ukrainian war effort has become a political hot topic. The hosts and Keller consider how the far-right Alternative for Deutschland is eager to abandon the Ukrainians to Putin, and how Trump and Musk are cheering that party on.

Plus current-events segment: Michael Podhorzer’s article “How Trump ‘Won.’” Trump’s victory was not from a huge upsurge in votes, but due to a collapse in Democratic turnout. The co-hosts also discuss the issue of political disengagement and highly alienated voters

  1. Surge to the right is imminent in Germany

What I said in the podcast about Germany’s democratic parties possibly banding together to keep the AfD out of power now seems rather moot.

Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union, equivalent to the Tories or the traditional Republicans), is flirting with the AfD. He does not quite put it this way in the election campaign, but it is quite obvious. Even Angela Merkel, former Chancelor and CDU politician, recently criticised Merz for passing a motion in the Bundestag with support from the AfD. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3w89w5dxgvo

The motion, which allows for permanent border controls and rejections at the border, breaks EU law because, under the Dublin agreement, every refugee has the legal right to have an asylum application considered in the country in which the asylum seeker arrives. https://www.lto.de/recht/hintergruende/h/merz-cdu-csu-asyl-fluechtlinge-zurueckweisungen-grenze-rechtswidrig

Clearly, Merz’s motion is a declaration of love to the AfD, Germany’s Trumpites. The want to leave the EU and the Euro. From the UK with love.

The next general elections take place on 23 February 2025. Current projections are such that the CDU hovers at around 29% and 34%, and the AfD at around 18% to 23%. https://www.wahlrecht.de/umfragen/ . When, not if, the CDU wins the elections, and the AfD is strong too, then both parties together will have more than 50% of the total votes, which would be enough to form a majority government. I’m afraid that Friedrich Merz will indeed form a government with the AfD, which will be a massive step towards a far-right Dictatorship.

  2. Update ahead of the German general elections on 23 February. German people take to the streets to protest against fascism and the politics of the CDU to cosy up to the AfD. So there is hope that the AfD will stay out of power this time. Nevertheless, the damage has been done as the CDU’s approach to take up AfD positions has allowed these to go mainstream.
