158: Marxism and the Philosophy of Science (Interview with David Bedford and W. Thom Workman Part I)

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome political scientists David Bedford and W. Thom Workman on the show to discuss their book Marx, Engels and the Philosophy of Science. The conversation centers on how science is increasingly under attack in the age of post-truth. It is attacked by religious fundamentalists, post-modernists, and Marxists influenced by post-modernism. With that dismissal, comes a lack of understanding of what science is and the importance of a philosophy of science. Bedford and Workman explain how their book helps us to understand science and why this is relevant to Marxism.

The authors and co-hosts also discuss the scientific practice of Marx and Engels, and the philosophic concepts needed to grasp it properly. In particular, they discuss the criteria of truth and justification needed to understand the concept of value and Marx’s falling-rate-of-profit theory.

Plus current-events segment: the co-hosts discuss more of the fallout from SCOTUS’s disastrous Louisiana v. Callais decision. In particular the consider the GOP gerrymandering fervor after the Virginia Supreme Court’s anti-democratic overturning of a recently passed referendum.
