Episode 86: Deepening Revolt Against Iran’s Theocratic Regime (with Theresa Henry)

Brendan and Andrew interview Theresa Henry, a Canadian Marxist-Humanist and author of recent articles on the ongoing revolt against the Iranian regime. They discuss the persistence, growth, deepening, and broadening of the rebellion, in the face of the regime’s efforts to crush it by means of executions and other forms of violence. Theresa highlights the leading role of women in the revolt and its slogan, “Woman, Life, Freedom,” as well as the activity of youth and strikes by workers in the oil industry, a critical sector of Iran’s economy. Contradictions within the rebellion are also discussed, especially the role of a right-wing opposition group that
includes former crown prince Reza Pahlavi. Theresa also situates the current stage of revolt within the history of rebellion–against the Shah, and later, against the Islamic Republic.

The episode’s current-events segment is on the police murder of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, and the outrage and fightback against it.
