Episode 161: The Economics of the Lower Phase of Communism (Discussion with Ante Andabak)

Co-hosts Andrew Kliman and Gabriel Donnelly welcome Ante Andabak, a teacher in and PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This episode is the second part of a discussion that began in a Marxist-Humanist Initiative meeting. Listeners are strongly encouraged to listen to that initial conversation, which is available to be viewed on the MHI website. In that conversation, they explored the building blocks that a genuinely post-capitalist mode of production will require, and whether it can be a viable and robust alternative to the present economic order.

This time around, they build on the initial conversation by turning to other aspects of the lower phase of communism, like how to assess an hour of labor without considering productivity. They consider what it would take for “entrepreneurship” to flourish in the lower phase, and why a communist society could not allow the anarchic nature of the free market to continue. Lastly, they discuss the metabolic relationship between man and nature and how it might be regulated or reset during the lower phase.
