Episode 114: Canadian Politics: The White-Nationalist Right & Indigenous Nations (with Theresa Henry)

Gabriel and Andrew interview Theresa Henry about the political situation in Canada. They discuss the political character of the so-called “Freedom Convoy,” why it was more successful in Canada than in the US, and whether Trumpism is resonating with the Canadian right. Against claims that the rise of Conservative Partyleader Pierre Poilievre means that Canadian conservatism has become more right-wing, Theresa argues that it has always been white nationalist, though its white nationalism was more disguised in recent decades. She and the co-hosts discuss Canada’s long history of violence against and oppression of Indigenous nations as well as their ongoing struggles, and why many white Canadian leftists focus on fighting “austerity” rather than on Indigenous nations’ struggles.

The following works were cited during the interview: trade-union condemnation of the “Freedom Convoy” and Zach Beauchamp’s data on its unpopularity; Sam Gindin’s anti-immigration position in Jacobin and MHI’s response; a report on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls; and writings on Canadian white-nationalism and Indigenous nations’ struggles by Laura J. Kwak, Glen Sean Coulthard, and Pamela Palmater.
