Yesterday, in New York City, we joined tens of thousands of protesters, marching in the rain for hours, in a “No Kings” demonstration, to oppose the descent of the United States into authoritarian rule under the Trump regime.

The composition of the crowd mirrored that of New York; it was multiracial and included significant proportions of all age groups. In the recent past, participation by young people in protests with similar themes was relatively sparse.

Starting at the New York Public Library and the adjoining Bryant Park on 42nd Street in Manhattan, protesters marched down Fifth Avenue to Madison Square Park, chanting “No ICE, No KKK, No Fascist USA,” “Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Donald Trump Has Got to Go,” “This is What Democracy Looks Like,” “Whose Streets? Our Streets,” and many other slogans.

The New York City march was one of approximately 2000 “No Kings” protests that took place across the US yesterday–including in Los Angeles, the center of the storm, where the Trump regime is violently attempting to “liberate” the city from the control of “socialists,” i.e., officials who were elected democratically.

Organizers of the “No Kings” protests estimated that “millions” of people attended them. Bloomberg News refrained from providing a numerical estimate but said that the demonstrations drew “massive crowds.” They coincided with–and were pro-democracy, antifascist Americans’ response to–Trump’s dictatorship-channeling military parade and birthday bash, also held yesterday.

The pro-democracy demonstrations were vastly larger than Trump’s, but lacked its weaponry and fighting personnel.
